HARWICH – The goals keep coming for Monomoy sophomore Emery Cappallo.
One year after she was moved from center-midfielder to forward, Cappallo has found her footing as a natural goal-scoring threat for the Sharks (15-0-2).
The Yarmouth Port resident tallied four goals and an assist on Friday to help lead Monomoy to a 9-1 victory over Martha’s Vineyard, bringing her season total to 34 goals with eight hat tricks.
“Last year was a transition for her,” said Kyle Cappallo, Emery’s father and Monomoy’s head coach. “She spent two-thirds of the season as a center-midfielder and we weren’t getting the goal production we needed. When I made the decision to move her up to forward, it definitely gave us a little more punch.”
Alongside forwards Sam Clarke, Mia Zimmerman and Sophie Larivee, Cappallo has anchored the Sharks’ scoring during its undefeated regular season. She leads the Cape and Islands League in points and is among the Bay State’s leaders with most hat tricks scored.
“She’s come through big and clutch in so many situations, especially corners,” her father said. “It really is a team effort that allows Emery to capitalize on opportunities. Having strong forwards like Sam, Mia and Sophie helps take the pressure off her. Team’s can’t double-team Emery, or else they are going to be leaving someone else open to score.”
