Margaret Jane Fennell
January 15, 2025
Margaret Jane Fennell was called home in her sleep Jan 11th, 2025, in Harwich, where she had lived and raised a family for 63 years. She was “Peggy Jane” to her friends, “PJ” to family, “Grandma PJ” to her grandchildren and “GiGi” to her great grandchildren.
PJ was born in Weymouth Dec 19, 1941, and raised in Hingham for 18 years. There she was a talented equestrian show jumper. In 1959 she moved to Harwich where she finished her senior year in high school and met the love of her life, Norman Albert Fennell. She worked for many years as a clerk at the Barnstable County Registry of Deeds (land court) in Barnstable where she had a knack for finding historical records.
In later years She was an avid reader, crossworder, and picture puzzler, and started each day with them to keep her mind sharp. Each spring she adorned her back deck with bountiful planters of hanging flowers and bird feeders that enticed an amazingly colorful array of local birds. She was also an accomplished cross stitcher and glass beader. She would spend months cross-stitching detailed Christmas stockings and beautiful Christmas ornaments from glass beads for her grand and great-grandchildren.
PJ is pre-deceased by her parents, Charles John Gabriel, and Doris Rosemere (Wetmore) Gabriel, her loving husband Norman A Fennell, former Chief of Police for the Town of Harwich, who was taken from us all far too early, and her dear sister, Barbara Gabriel Shea.
PJ is survived by three children: David A. Fennell (Carolyn) of Panama City; Florida, Penny J. Fennell of Harwich; Daniel J. Fennell (companion Christina) of Fort Dodge, Iowa; six grandchildren: Wayne N. Fennell (Heidi); Daniel D. Fennell (Samantha); Briana C. Weber (Daniel); SFC Tiffany J. Challies (USA); Jacob N. Fennell (Krystal); and Lt. Zoë I. Fennell (USN); and eight great-grandchildren: Victoria R. Fennell; Archer G. Fennell; Delaney R. Fennell; Emmalee W. Weber; Thomas A. Weber; Margaret “Maggie” K. Weber; Xavier J. Santana; and Ava I. Carlton; and numerous beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.
PJ will be cremated and interred in a private ceremony at Island Pond Cemetery in Harwich.
In lieu of flowers please make donations to: VNA of Cape Cod (Hospice).
