Alan Thomas Sachtleben

April 16, 2025

Our beloved husband, Dad and Grampy passed peacefully from this world on March 30 from complications of a stroke.
Born in New Jersey on April 20, 1942 to Grace and Arthur Sachtleben. Alan grew up in Fayson Lakes and Montclair NJ. He attended College High in Montclair and Williams College.
In college, he joined the US Naval Reserves and after graduation served 3 years active duty as Ships Navigator on the USS Kaskaskia and the USS Pawkatuck, oilers based in Mayport, FL. In Florida, he met the Mississippi girl who would become his loving wife of 59 years.
Upon completing active duty in 1967 he was anxious to experience “the real world” and began his investment career as a securities analyst in Boston at State Street Bank while attending evening classes for both the CFA exams and an MBA at Babson College. It took 7 years but the diploma came with “high distinction”. Career moves took him to Pittsburgh and Mellon Bank in 1983 and to Houston and American Capital Mutual funds in 1987. He retired as Chief Investment Officer Equities for the Van Kampen American Funds.
In 2002, Alan and Patty retired full time to Chatham. There his vocation became his avocation as he used his investment experience in service to the community he loved. He served as Treasurer of the Cannon Hill Association, Marconi Maritime Museum and the Monomoy Yacht Club, as a Member and Chairman of the Chatham Finance Committee and on the boards of the Chatham Historical Society and the Eldredge Public Library.
In order to be closer to family as they aged, he and Patty moved to Nashville in 2018 and reluctantly became Chatham summer residents. Alan is survived by his wife, Patricia Quin Sachtleben; children, Douglas (Susan) Sachtleben , Hudson OH; Amy Sachtleben, Kirkland, WA; Paul (Courtney) Sachtleben, Nashville, TN and his beloved five belles; Lucy, Mary, Isabel, Annabel and Sarah. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy S. Mitchell of Denver CO.
