Athlete Of The Week: Aidan Schafer

WEST BARNSTABLE – Cape Cod Tech’s win Friday against Sturgis East might have been particularly sweet for Aidan Schafer, the only senior on the boys lacrosse team.
Schafer scored three goals in the 12-2 win, the second straight for the Crusaders and the first set of consecutive victories for the team since 2022, when he was a freshman.
“It’s been great to step up and be the leader for this team,” Schafer said. “We haven’t had a win streak since my freshman year, so my sophomore, junior year we’ve only had one win, so this is really awesome.”
Schafer, a midfielder, was particularly exultant after his third goal, scored in the third quarter to put Cape Tech up 7-2. He said he “threw a good dodge” — an evasive move — on the Sturgis East defender.
“When I was on the sideline, my coach said to throw a dodge and see what happens, try and beat him, so I did that and I scored,” he said.
A Mashpee resident, Schafer is leading a team this season that has already exceeded its win and scoring totals from the past two years combined. He said a lot of players “stepped up” in the win Friday. “Our offense is moving,” he said. “Our defense is really stepping up, and our goalie is insane in net.”
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
