Monomoy Boys Golf Finishing Regular Season Strong

HARWICH – The Monomoy boys golf team is rolling to the postseason as they follow up on last year’s historic second-place finish in the state championship.
After ending as runners-up in the 2024 Division 3 state championship, a first for the program, the Sharks began 2025 on a five-match win streak, qualifying comfortably for next week’s sectional. With juniors Cam Reeves and Hank Brown at the top of the lineup bolstered by a host of new players, Monomoy is looking to make another run like 2024.
“I think we can do something pretty close to that, if everyone just comes together and plays their own game,” Brown said.
The Sharks won a tri-match Monday at Cranberry Valley Golf Course against Nantucket and Sturgis West, posting a team score of 249 to the visitors’ 251 and 270. They had one more tri-match left to play Tuesday (after The Chronicle’s deadline) before heading to Willowbend Country Club in Mashpee for the Cape and Islands League championship tournament, where Monomoy finished eighth last year.
Starting with its trio of captains in Reeves, Brown and senior Tom Chase, Monomoy has had a camaraderie since day one, head coach John Anderson said. That, coupled with the Sharks’ hot start, may in turn end up being balanced with a hot finish.
“The team is very gelled,” Anderson said. “They're always positive with each other. They don't really compete against each other. They're just always rooting for each other, so in that sense, it's been a really great season.”
The Monomoy lineup, as is necessary for a strong and cohesive golf team, has seen contributions from top to bottom. Reeves and Brown have both slotted in at the one and two spots, essentially collectively serving as the Sharks’ number one, according to Anderson. Senior Joey Ventura at the number three “has just done a really solid job,” Anderson said.
Chase, the team’s primary fourth player, is “kind of the father of the team,” according to Anderson. “He's one of the most mature young adults I've ever met,” he said.
Another pair of seniors in Michael Webster and Luke Raftery have stepped up from junior varsity and filled in a much-needed component of the team. Rounding out the lineup are juniors Brodie LaValley and Ethan Carey.
“It was a really pleasant surprise, and they've been great teammates,” Anderson said of Webster and Raftery.

On Monday against Nantucket and Sturgis West, Reeves shot 38, Raftery 39, Chase 41, Ventura 42, Webster 43 and Carey 46 to earn the win.

Because of the great players that had popped up this year in the wake of graduating departures from last season like Jackson Rocco, Braden Burke and Casey Huse, the Sharks were in the mix for a league title.

“We didn't know how that was all going to work out, and so it's worked out better than my expectations,” Anderson said.

As the league championship and state sectional approach, Monomoy is trying to finish strong, according to Anderson. They’re focused on the sectional, where Reeves and Brown will have individual goals while the rest of the team is “really just so excited to be there,” Anderson said, and should be in contention to place as one of the top three schools in order to advance.

Meanwhile, the captains — Reeves, Brown and Chase — have set the tone since the beginning in terms of building the team’s chemistry.

“It gets everybody wanting to be here,” Brown said. “If you're having a good time as a team, everyone wants to go out, do well for the team, do well for their school. If it's not a good team environment, nobody wants to come and help each other out. If people are enjoying being around each other, you want to go do the best you can and help each other out.”
