Fashion’s The Word At Orleans Elementary

by Ryan Bray

ORLEANS – One by one, first graders at Orleans Elementary School hit the runway in the school gymnasium to show off their love of letters and sounds.
The school’s annual Phonics Fashion Show welcomed parents and members of the community to watch students celebrate the letters of the alphabet in style. Each student made their way down the runway, each sporting a hat and paper vest celebrating a specific letter. As music played over the PA, first grade teachers and event emcees Amy Tierney and Erin Lagasse introduced students with fun, alliterative wordplay.
Lagasse came up with the idea for the fashion show, which has been held annually at the school since 2017.
“It’s just an appropriate way to showcase what they’ve learned in a safe and fun and non-threatening way,” she said. “We get to be the ones to act the fool and they just get to have fun.”
