Cape Rep Sponsors First ‘Raid The Rack’ Costume Giveaway

As winter transitions to spring, a common occurrence is for people to look for ways to refresh their wardrobe. Whether it be a new print or a new style, sometimes all it takes to create a new you is the perfect piece. If this is something that has run across your mind, circle your calendars for April 11.
On that date, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Cape Rep Theatre in Brewster is having its first ever “Raid the Rack” costume giveaway. The event will feature a variety of clothing from Cape Rep Theatre’s past productions that they don’t have the space for anymore and don’t want to see thrown away.
Marketing Associate Jazzy MacDonald said the event is a great opportunity for people to add pieces from their favorite shows into their wardrobe.
“We are giving away all these beautiful pieces of clothing,” said MacDonald. “Instead of bringing it to the dumpster, we figured a lot of people have need for clothing,”
Heading into its 41st season, Cape Rep Theatre was dealing with two issues this off-season, according to MacDonald: a desire to reorganize the costume room and a search for a way to bring the community to the property in advance of the new season. This event accomplishes both.
“We have a pretty massive costume shop. And for 41 years now, we've been collecting costumes and putting them in bins and boxes and things. And a lot of the stuff we just don't have any use for, or they're things that are easily replaceable,” said MacDonald. “We were brainstorming what ways we could get our own situation a little bit more organized, but then also jump into the new season with maybe some new faces. And this seemed like the perfect little shindig.”
Cape Rep Theater was founded in 1986. According to its mission and vision, the theater promotes an artist-driven community committed to providing professional creative opportunities for Cape Cod residents. While there may not be pieces from 1986, there is a wide assortment of jeans and shirts and hats that many people could find useful, MacDonald said. They have pieces that are “super cool and era specific” and are encouraging eventgoers to take as much as they want.
“We can have some people learn about what we do here at Cape Rep and maybe wear some of their favorite costumes that they've seen on our stage,” said MacDonald.
The theater is also accepting donations at the event. The initiative comes from a sustainability and practical position.
“We are a nonprofit theater, so we don't make a whole lot of money on top of our operating costs. We are always trying to raise money so that we can produce better and more extravagant shows,” said MacDonald. “We don't want to charge anybody for any of these clothes because we know that there's a need for clothing and fun pieces.”
There are some interesting pieces as well, according to MacDonald.
“Some of them are designer clothing and part of fashion collections throughout the decades,” MacDonald said. “There's some cool track jackets. We have space-looking bomber jackets. We've got scarves. We've got hats. We've got shoes. We've got gloves and things.”
Anything left over will be donated to the Family Pantry of Cape Cod.
Cape Rep Theatre is located at 3299 Main St. in Brewster. The event will be held in the recently renovated Crosby Barn on the Cape Rep campus.
