PLEASANT LAKE – Junior Belle Bigley flourished as the sole Crusader representing Cape Cod Tech’s girls track and field team at the MVADA Small Division championship meet Monday.
Bigley, first and foremost, won the discus event with a distance of 86 feet, 5 inches — a mark that was more than 2.5 feet further than second place’s number.
She also hit a personal best (24 feet, 9 inches) in shot put, good for sixth place, and placed 11th in javelin (60 feet, 1 inch).
Bigley has thrown discus since seventh grade. Originally from Colorado, she started on a middle school team with about 200 people, she said. That stands in contrast to currently being one of a handful of girls on the Cape Tech team. Still, she and the other athletes score points in their individual events with a “do your best” mindset, according to Bigley.
“Go out there, know that you tried your hardest and then just hopefully win,” she said.
In Bigley’s case, it’s less hoping to win and more actually placing at the top of her events. During the first meet of this season, Bigley threw for a personal record that qualified her for states. As a freshman, even, she placed third in discus at the vocational championships.
