CHATHAM - Two motorists were injured after their vehicle rolled through a split-rail fence and down a steep hill in the Riverbay neighborhood Wednesday morning.
Police officers were the first to arrive at the scene at 126 Chipping Stone Rd. just after 11 a.m., and found an SUV that had rolled down an embankment, trapping the driver in the vehicle.
Firefighters arrived and stabilized the vehicle using chains to keep it from slipping further down the hill toward Pickerel Pond, as rescuers provided medical aid.
"Chatham Firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life extrication tools as well as chainsaws and a strut-stabilization system to gain access to the patient," a fire department news release reads.
A Boston Med-Flight helicopter was dispatched to Chatham Airport for the driver, but after a lengthy extrication, the patient was taken to Cape Cod Hospital by ambulance.
A second patient had self-extricated from the car and sustained a non-life threating leg injury. Harwich Fire transported this patient to Cape Cod Hospital. The identities of the motorists were not released.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
