“People come to the Cape and realize, ‘No, I want to slow down. I want to be mindful. I want to consider what I’m putting in my body and how I’m approaching my health and wellness,’” Dr. Paul Anastasio said.
For almost 30 years, Dr. Anastasio has been helping people feel better through a natural, holistic approach to health and wellness at Harwich Health Center located on Pleasant Lake Avenue. A Dennis-Yarmouth graduate, Dr. Anastasio earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Trinity College in 1988 before receiving his doctorate in chiropractic from Palmer College of Chiropractic West in 1994.
He began practicing chiropractic in Harwich in 1996, and in 2002 he moved into his current location and established the Harwich Health Center. From the beginning, Dr. Anastasio envisioned the center as something different from a traditional medical practice. His goal was to create a place where people could access a variety of services all under one roof, with an emphasis on natural, non-pharmaceutical approaches to health.
The center originally offered chiropractic care, massage therapy and acupuncture, with acupuncturist Jenny Wood among the first practitioners. Today, Dr. Anastasio continues to offer chiropractic and massage therapy, while the center is also home to the Healing Therapies of Cape Cod (healingtherapiescapecod.com), Spa A La Mer (spaalamer.com) and Mary Lucille Glynn, psychospiritual medium (mglynn.com).
Dr. Anastasio recently expanded his practice to include laser-assisted fat loss which he is really passionate about. The program incorporates photobiomodulation, which uses specific wavelengths of light as part of a wellness and body-contouring program.
“I wanted to offer an alternative to pharmaceutical-type care — a more natural, holistic, non-pharmaceutical approach,” Dr. Anastasio said. Dr. Anastasio combines the light-based treatment with individualized lifestyle recommendations and, when appropriate, nutritional supplements. His approach is not about a quick fix, he says, but about helping patients make sustainable changes that can improve their overall well-being.
“I’m really drawn to this type of fat loss because it also results in more energy, a better metabolism and a stronger, more vital individual,” he said.
Nutrition is central at Harwich Health Center. Anastasio evaluates each patient individually, taking into account their health history, medications and lifestyle before making recommendations. He focuses on supplements designed with absorption and bioavailability in mind rather than simply recommending a long list of products.
Ultimately, Dr. Anastasio says, his goal goes beyond helping someone lose weight or feel better temporarily. He is increasingly interested in the concept of health span — the length of time a person remains healthy, active and vital as they age.
“Longevity is how long someone lives,” he said. “Health span is that stretch of time where people retain their vitality as they age.”
For Dr. Anastasio, that means focusing on small, sustainable lifestyle changes, personalized care and tools that support the body’s natural processes. His philosophy is simple: health is about more than simply living longer. It’s about feeling good enough to enjoy those years.
