Athlete Of The Week: Isa Do Carmo

PLEASANT LAKE – Coming into the match against Mashpee last Friday, freshman Isa Do Carmo had seen about five minutes — Cape Cod Tech girls soccer head coach Ellen Muir estimated — of game action all season.

So when she flipped a shot over the head of Mashpee’s goalkeeper late in the second half, the out-of-reach score for the Crusaders didn’t matter. Do Carmo’s first-ever goal was special regardless.

“She's not played soccer before,” Muir said. “She's super athletic but just learning the game, so I’m wicked impressed that she got a goal in the back of the net against a team that was crushing us 9-0.”

Indeed, Mashpee went on to win 9-1, but Do Carmo’s goal was a prominent highlight. A measure of decibels immediately following each of the 10 total goals would likely prove as much.

Do Carmo isn’t the only player new to soccer on the Crusaders this year, so it’s possible her goal also served as an example to the other rookies that the game can definitely be learned. And surely the shot also reflected the impact of the guidance delivered downstream by the experienced Crusaders on the team.

“She's never scored a goal before and has never played in a game before,” Muir said. “So that was kind of impressive.”
