Monomoy Boys Lacrosse Thumps Mashpee, Improves To 3-0
MASHPEE – After guiding the Monomoy-Mashpee boys hockey team to the program’s first postseason win this winter, Monomoy Regional High School science teacher Chris Harlow has taken over the school’s boys lacrosse program.
Despite the coaching change, the Sharks have turned in a fast start under Harlow, who served as an assistant lacrosse coach at Sandwich the past four years. The team cruised to a 14-2 victory over Mashpee on Friday to improve to 3-0 following victories over Cape Cod Academy (17-11) and Dennis-Yarmouth (11-7).
“We have a bunch of really talented players,” Harlow said. “I’m not as familiar with these guys coming into the season as I was the hockey guys, but it’s been amazing. We have so much great leadership.”
Seniors Harry Michaud, Tamer Khalil, Jake Giorgio and Jed Zimmerman have anchored the leadership as the captains for the Sharks, who brought back nine seniors from last year’s 15-4 squad.
Khalil, Michaud and fellow senior Jackson Rocco tallied two goals apiece in the Mashpee win, while senior Aidan Stone netted four goals and classmate Charlie Hamilton also found the back of the net.
Brodie LaValley added two goals, and freshman Izaiah Freeman recorded one.
“I feel like this year is definitely a lot more consistent with the scoring,” said Khalil, a Chatham resident. “Last year, it was myself and a few others who racked up most of the goals, but this year everyone is getting involved. It’s a lot more spread out.”
Harlow said his focus thus far has been teaching the sets and systems he wants the team to implement. After escaping D-Y with a four-goal victory, the Sharks dominated the Falcons at both ends of the field during Friday’s nonleague contest.
“Everything came together — I thought we looked amazing on both sides of the ball,” Harlow said. “Our offense was running lacrosse plays. Early on, our first game was a lot of one-on-one matchups that weren’t necessarily lacrosse plays.”
Stone, a Harwich resident, described Harlow’s coaching style as “amazing” and noted it has helped that the roster has so much experience playing with each other.
“A lot of us have been playing together for a while,” Stone said. “I think the chemistry is there and our seniors are really clicking right now. That’s been huge for us.”
Khalil agreed, adding “hats off to Harlow” for helping the Sharks get off to a fast start this spring.
“He definitely took us from one level to a more advanced place,” Khalil said. “I’m definitely excited to see us improve from our first scrimmage against Sandwich — which wasn’t great — to where we are now. It’s definitely something to be proud of.”
A healthy Barnstable County requires great community news.
