Our View: In Uncertain Times, Just Keep Swimming

by The Cape Cod Chronicle

These days, uncertainty is literally everywhere. The economy could be headed for a recession. From student loans to veterans’ benefits, key social services are in jeopardy. Federal workers everywhere — and right here on the Lower Cape — are looking for new jobs. Science is being sidelined, threatening everything from public health to fisheries management. The chaos being sown in Washington could yield a harvest of heartache right here. What’s to be done in the face of overwhelming what-ifs?
 Just keep swimming.
Know of a local family going through a challenging time? Be like the April Fools’ swimmers and come together for a good cause. It's a zany group of firefighters and friends who take a frigid swim each year to help local folks in need. And it sets a good example for all of us.
Worried about the price of food? Give to a food pantry. Concerned for a neighbor who’s out of work? Stop by for a friendly chat. Anxious about Social Security or your retirement plan? Spend some time with an older person. Fearful that your government doesn’t hear your concerns? Speak out fearlessly, or join a protest.
Don’t let current events send you into a spiral of dismay. Take action in your own neighborhood and take back a little control in uncertain times.
 No swim fins required.
