Paul Jenkins & Sons was founded in 1963 by Katy Maguire’s grandfather Paul Jenkins and her great uncle as a local well-drilling business, and in 1973 her grandfather took over the entire business and added a plumbing and heating division. Through the years, Maguire’s dad, Paul Jenkins Jr., and uncle, David Jenkins, along with his wife Heidi, successfully ran the business. While Paul headed up the plumbing division, David and Heidi ran the well drilling side. Both Paul and David each have held their master plumbing and well drilling licenses for over 30 years. The company now employs 11 people.
“My dad is still running the business part time and is still involved,” Maguire said. “I have taken over more on the plumbing side and my brother (PJ Jenkins) and husband (Justin Maguire) are taking over the drilling side of the business.”
After many decades, Jenkins & Sons is regarded in the Lower Cape community as one of the area’s premiere and respected heating, plumbing and well drilling companies.
Maguire is mainly involved with managing the office side of things at Jenkins & Sons. At its core is a full-fledged family operation.
Jenkins & Sons does everything on the plumbing side of the business from new construction to repairs and general service and everything in between.
“If you have a toilet that’s running, we take care of that,” said Maguire. “Or if you have a brand new house that you’re building, we do all the plumbing from start to finish. We also handle town sewer and water connections. We basically handle all of the stuff to keep water running inside of your house.”
While most of the plumbing business grounds Jenkins & Sons in the Mid and Lower Cape, the well drilling part of the business keeps the crew busy all over the Cape.
“When a town puts a ban on water, people who have wells can use their water as much as they want,” Maguire said. “Because wells aren't pulling from the town’s water supply, which has been treated for drinking and showering, people have a well for watering outside and even refilling pools. People with wells use the water that's below their property to water with and it's going back into the ground when they water.”
When I asked about the process, I was intrigued to learn all about the drilling part of the operation. Many people often will install a well on their property in addition to having access to town water or sewer.
“So with drilling, you drill right down into the ground,” Maguire said. “We have a big rig that we will bring in and we will first send down a test hole into the ground to see what the sand is like. We check to see if we are going to be able to get any water and we also then find out how deep the water is below.
“When people give us a call and say what they need, they'll look at the property to see where's the best place to put the well in. On the well drilling side, the process is a little more extensive because we have to apply for a well permit, and we have to make sure it fits all of the setbacks with conservation. The health department has to approve it, and then we can do the install. We manage the whole thing from start to finish. The only thing that the homeowner has to do is get an electrician in there to wire up the well.”
Mark Power of Power Construction has worked with the business for generations. “I have been working with Paul Jenkins plumbing and well drilling for more than 40 years,” he said. “Starting with Paul, so many years ago, to the present day working with Joe and Dave, I have always experienced professionalism and quality work. I am thrilled to see the next generation stepping into the business and continuing their values and work ethic. I know I will be able to continue to depend on them.”
“So many of our customers have been around still since my grandfather’s time,” Maguire said. “And now we deal with their kids and their grandchildren. It feels really good. As a family business, it feels great knowing we still work with multiple generations of our customers.”
