Nauset Track, Wrestling Compete At State Championships

It’s that time of winter that local athletes are hoping to be at their best with state championships on the line.
While Nauset track and field athletes and wrestlers competed in their respective state tournaments over the weekend, the Monomoy boys basketball team and Nauset boys hockey and Nauset-Monomoy girls hockey were preparing for their state tournaments to begin.
The Nauset boys and girls track and field teams had strong showings at the Division 4 state meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston on Sunday, including earning multiple second-place finishes and school records.
The Warriors’ boys 4x200 relay team, comprised of Adian Brown, Isaiah Robinson, Dominic Bebber and Damian Bebber, posted a school record time of 1:34.6 to finish second.
Brown added a second place finish in the 55-meter hurdles with a personal record and school record time of 7:81 seconds. He also posted a PR in the 55-meter dash with a 6.75 in the preliminary round.
Damian Bebber added a third-place finish in the 300-meter dash (36.40), while Robinson also turned in a sixth-place finish in the 55 hurdles with a personal record of 7.79.
On the girls’ side, Madeline Mahoney finished fourth in the 1,000-meter dash (3:01.72) and fifth in the 2 mile. Her 2-mile time of 11:57.96 shattered her personal record by 40 seconds.
Violet Roche finished fourth in the 300 (41.90) and finished fifth in the high jump (5 feet, 2 inches).
Nauset’s girls team finished 10th among teams with a team score of 18, while the boys finished sixth with 25.
Like the track and field teams, Nauset’s wrestling team received some strong performances. Junior Peter Silvernail posted a third-place finish in the heavyweight division to earn a spot in the All-State tournament.
Fellow junior Ashton Lutz advanced to the 215-pound quarterfinals before falling to Wakefield’s Joe Lamonica and Nauset eighth-grader Jack Peno advanced to the 132-pound Round of 16 before being upended by West Dews of Taconic.
Peno made history by becoming the first eighth-grader to qualify for the state championship.
Nauset boys hockey is ranked No. 1 in the latest Division 3 Power Rankings and should be the top seed in the state tournament, while the Nauset-Monomoy girls were ranked fourth in the latest Division 2 girls rankings.
On the hardwood, Monomoy’s boys team will be the lone playoff team from the Lower Cape and was ranked No. 16 in the latest Division 4 rankings released Feb. 16.
