EASTHAM – Amidst uncertainty over staffing across federal departments and agencies, the Cape Cod National Seashore is on its way toward securing its annual complement of seasonal employees.

Park Superintendent Jennifer Flynn told the seashore advisory commission Monday that the park is on track to hire approximately 110 employees this summer. Some have already begun work, she said, while others likely won’t start until late May.

“Folks will be staggering on in the next couple of months,” she said.

Flynn also confirmed that the three probationary employees that had their jobs eliminated in February have returned to work. Those include a biologist, an archeologist and a park ranger.

The positions were initially eliminated as part of ongoing efforts through the Department of Government Efficiency to reduce the federal workforce. But the Interior Department, under which the National Park Service operates, has since been mandated by a court order to reinstitute the positions.

The National Park Service said in an email last month that the three seashore employees would receive back pay for the time they lost after initially being laid off. The Trump administration is in the process of appealing the court order, the park service said.

“We are very happy to see them back,” Flynn said.
